A Javanese Keris Desa, with 18th century blade.

Umur (age): Kartasura, the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram.

The Keris with a hand forged ‘13 Luk’ waved Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (pattern type: ‘Adeg Rambut’). Dapur in ‘Sangkelat’ (= Elephant trunk shape). Copper Mendak (cuff), between hilt and blade. Ukiran (Keris hilt) in local style, and carved from Teak wood. Warangka (sheath) of ‘Branggah Taman’ type (‘boat’ shaped) and made from Pelet Nyamel wood patiently carved by hand. Gandar (body) (body) with smooth brass Pendok (cover), brass Bunton decorated with ‘Lung Lungan’ pattern.

Length of the blade, including ‘Pesi’ (tang of the blade): 41.8 cm. (1x)

Note 1: This Keris Desa was probably made in region of Yogyakarta.

Note 2: Between 1680 and 1755, Kartasura was the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram. This Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonized by the Dutch. It is commonly referred to as the Kartasura era or period of the Mataram sultanate. It preceded the transfer to Surakarta by Pakubuwana II.
