A Javanese Keris Solo, with 18th century blade.

Umur (age): Kartasura, the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram.

The Keris with a straight hand forged Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (with fine pattern type: ‘Bonang Rinenteng’). Dapur in ‘Tilam Upih’ shape. Small copper Mendak (cuff) with ‘Untu Walang’ (=grasshopper teeth) between the blade and the hilt. Ukiran (Keris hilt) in ‘Yudo Winatan’ shape, and carved from Tayuman wood. Fine Warangka (sheath) of ‘Gayaman Bancihan’ type (‘kidney’ shaped) and made from Palm wood patiently carved by hand. Gandar (body) (body) with brass (cover), brass Bunton with ‘Tiker’ pattern (braided).

Note 1: Between 1680 and 1755, Kartasura was the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram. This Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonized by the Dutch. It is commonly referred to as the Kartasura era or period of the Mataram sultanate. It preceded the transfer to Surakarta by Pakubuwana II.
