A West Javanese Keris, with 18th century blade.

Umur (age): Kartasura, the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram.

Asal (origin): Surakarta

The Keris with a hand forged ‘9 Luk’ waved Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (pattern type: ‘Mlinjon Wengkon’). Dapur in a very fine ‘Karna Tinanding Pudak Sategal’ (double Elephant trunk). Copper gilded Mendak (cuff) of ‘Kendit Seling Merah’ type, between hilt and blade. Ukiran (Keris hilt) in ‘Jejeran Yudo Winatan’ shape, and carved from Tayuman wood. Fine old Warangka (sheath) of ‘Ladrang Ksatriyan’ type (‘boat’ shaped) and made from Trembalo Iras wood patiently carved by hand. Gandar (body) (body) with brass and red copper Pendok (cover), Blewah with ‘Krawang Templek’ and ‘Lung Kanthet’ pattern. The back with relief ‘OHB’ in a Laurel wreath.

Length of the blade, including ‘Pesi’ (tang of the blade): 42.3 cm. (1x)

Note 1: Between 1680 and 1755, Kartasura was the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram. This Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonized by the Dutch. It is commonly referred to as the Kartasura era or period of the Mataram sultanate. It preceded the transfer to Surakarta by Pakubuwana II.
