Elias Pieter van Bommel was a student of the Amsterdam Rijksacademie. His tutor the slightly older landscape painter George Andries Roth (1809 – 1887), who influenced his early preference for landscape painting. Later Van Bommel changed to painting detailed and lively looking townscapes. His inspiration derived from the cities of Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Amsterdam. Van Bommel travelled extensively: he visited Belgium, Germany, France, Hungary and Italy and painted many works during his trips abroad. He exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen and Leeuwarden between 1833 – 39 and 1841 – 59.
