Dunselman studied at the Drawing Institute in Den Helder and moved to Antwerp at the age of 18, where he continued his studies at the art academy. In 1884 he won the Prix de Rome for painting together with Jacobus van Looy, he then made a study trip to Italy and Spain. He became a member of the Catholic art circle De Violier and Arti et Amicitiae.
