Keris Madura Sumenep, with 17th century blade.

The Keris with a hand forged ‘13 Luk’ waved Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (pattern type: ‘Kulit Semangka Wengkon’). Dapur in ‘Sempana’ (= Elephant trunk shape). Gilded Mendak (cuff) of ‘Kendit’ type, between hilt and blade. Ukiran (Keris hilt) in ‘Landhian Pulasir’ shape, and carved from Djati wood. The Warangka (sheath) of ‘Udang Sumenep’ type in Madura style and in the shape of a bird with floral decoration. Warangka and Gandar (body) both made from Djati wood and patiently carved by hand.

Note 1: Between 1680 and 1755, Kartasura was the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram. This Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonized by the Dutch. It is commonly referred to as the Kartasura era or period of the Mataram sultanate. It preceded the transfer to Surakarta by Pakubuwana II.
