Ring with Mounted Warrior. Dogon People, Mali
A bronze ring made in the lost wax technique, with thick, flat bezel. To the top the figure of a horse with applied ears and plaited wire bridle. To the back a stylised figure of a male wearing a conical headdress.
Horse and rider statues and images are associated among the Dogon with wealth, and powerful, victorious individuals. Rings such as this example were worn by the hogon, or religious chiefs, and senior blacksmiths who were believed to have mystical powers.
